Gallimard in fact pointed out to Proust that the composition of his manuscripts was very difficult, which he realized when he went to Bellenand's (close to Paris) to follow the composition closely. And he suggested that it would be wiser to have the manuscript typed in a clean version rather than sending directly to the printer the cahiers strewn with multiple crossings out and additions.
