I have more faith in our victory than ever. But I find that some arguments demand revision and refinement. The fortification argument <ref name="n8" />, for example, is true, but in inverse proportion to the fortress' size. Like while infinitely multiplying the sides of a polygon, we see it merge with its circumference. Suppose (horresco referens – a very Romanian “horresco”) the Germans, god forbid, conquer the entire world, they would be in a fortress, but would be comfortable there. At the moment I find their fortress too vast for my liking. I think the earlier we can cut off Poland etc. etc., the more pertinent the argument will become and the better it will be. Tibi.
J'ai plus foi que jamais dans notre victoire. Mais je trouve que certains arguments demanderaient à être rajeunis ou perfectionnés. L'argument de la forteresse<ref name="n8" /> par exemple est vrai, mais en raison inverse de la grandeur de la forteresse. Comme en multipliant indéfiniment les côtés d'un polygone, on le voit se confondre avec la circonférence, suppose (horresco referens – « horresco » très roumain) que les Boches ce qu'à Dieu ne plaise conquièrent toute la terre, ils seraient dans une forteresse, mais y seraient à l'aise. Actuellement je trouve leur forteresse un peu vaste pour mon goût. Je crois que plus tôt on pourra en retrancher la Pologne etc. etc., plus l'argument deviendra topique et mieux ce sera. Tibi.

My dear Antoine,

Forgive me for not having responded to your letter earlier. [2]. I have been in a lot of physical and spiritual pain. I make many wishes for you, that, in these days, however sad, we remember that the years return carrying the same natural beauties, but without bringing people back with them. Alas, in 1916, there will be violets, apple blossoms; before them, the flowers of frost, but Bertrand will no longer be there [3].
