Thank you for the suggestions! Almost all have been implemented - retained 'prix Goncourt' at the end of the sentence and 'I am happy like I never have been' for a more formal tone, 'wasn't' changed to 'was not'.

The usual convention in English is to capitalize prix Goncourt to Prix Goncourt. (Yorktaylors)
