After Romania entered the war on the side of the Allies in May 1916, when its military defeats by Germany forced Romania to capitulate, King Ferdinand I appointed Marghiloman Prime Minister in March 1918 to negociate a separate peace with Germany, hoping that a German-friendly minister would obtain more favourable terms.
