In a letter of [2 or 3 November 1915], Proust announces to Marie Scheikévtch, who is in mourning for a brother fallen at the front (see CP 02892; Kolb, XIV, no. 3), that he is going to send her "in the next few days" a copy of Du côté de chez Swann in which he has "attempted to summarize for [her] on the blank pages [...] an episode entirely different from the rest and the only one that at this moment might find in [her] shattered heart some affinities of pain" (CP 03020; Kolb, XIV, no. 132). This letter-dedication must therefore have been sent shortly after 3 November 1915. The facsimile after which we have reviewed the transcription is published in Lettres à Madame Scheikévitch (see under the title "Publications antérieurs" (Previous Publications) in Informations).
